When to resort to pharmaceuticals

Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT) is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and changing negative and self-defeating patterns of thought and behaviour. Although ERBE is not a drug therapy, there are times when it may be appropriate to consider the use of medication as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

In CRRT, medication is considered to be helpful in certain specific situations. For example, when symptoms of anxiety or depression are severe and are causing significant disruption to the patient's daily life. In these cases, medication can help reduce symptoms and allow the patient to feel well enough to participate in therapy.

However, it is important to note that CBT does not consider medication as a long-term solution to emotional or behavioural problems. Cognitive behavioural therapy still focuses on addressing the underlying patterns of thinking and behaviour that may be causing symptoms, rather than simply providing temporary relief.

The decision to use medication as part of a treatment plan should be made in collaboration between the patient and the mental health professional. The practitioner should consider the potential benefits and risks of medications based on the patient's individual needs and circumstances, and discuss the pros and cons of any specific medication.

In addition, it is important that the patient follows the recommendation of the mental health professional regarding the dosage and duration of medication treatment. Medication should not be stopped abruptly without professional guidance, as this may cause unpleasant or even dangerous side effects.

In summary, TREC recognises that medication can be helpful in certain situations, but the focus is always on addressing the underlying patterns of thinking and behaviour in order to achieve lasting change. The decision to use medication as part of a treatment plan should be made in collaboration between the patient and the mental health professional, and the professional's recommendation regarding dosage and duration of treatment should always be followed.
