World Mental Health Day: 10 October

Every year, 10 October marks World Mental Health Day, a date promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness of the importance of emotional wellbeing and mental health. This day gives us the opportunity to reflect on mental health in our communities, combat the stigma that still surrounds mental disorders and promote prevention strategies and support for those who need it most.

Why is World Mental Health Day Important?

Mental health is fundamental to our overall well-being. Yet despite its relevance, it is often overlooked, underestimated or stigmatised. Nearly one billion people worldwide suffer from some form of mental disorder, and the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated these problems, affecting individuals of all ages and social strata.

World Mental Health Day aims to raise awareness of mental health problems and the importance of promoting accessible and appropriate care for all. The day also aims to break the stigma that still surrounds mental disorders by fostering a culture of empathy, understanding and support.

The 2024 Theme: "Mental Health for All".

Each year, World Mental Health Day focuses on a specific theme, and this year, the focus is on "Mental Health for All". The aim is to ensure that everyone, regardless of where they live or their personal circumstances, has access to the resources and support needed to maintain their mental wellbeing.

It seeks to highlight the importance of making mental health services available to all, especially the most vulnerable and marginalised communities. This inclusive approach highlights the urgency of accessible and affordable mental health care systems, removing economic, social and geographic barriers to access.

Breaking the Stigma: A Global Challenge

One of the biggest obstacles for people facing mental health problems is the stigma surrounding emotional and psychological disorders. Fear of being judged or discriminated against prevents many people from seeking help, which exacerbates their suffering.

World Mental Health Day presents a crucial opportunity to start open conversations about mental health and to educate society about the reality of mental health disorders. Only by normalising conversations about mental health can we break down stigma and foster a culture of understanding and support.

Promoting Mental Wellbeing in Everyday Life

Taking care of our mental health should not be limited to a date on the calendar; it is a daily commitment to our well-being. Here are some practical strategies to promote mental health in your daily life:

1. Practice Self-Care

Self-care can take many forms: from setting clear boundaries at work and in relationships, to practising activities that bring you wellbeing, such as exercise, meditation or relaxing hobbies.

2. Maintain Healthy Social Connections

Social connections are an essential pillar of mental health. Maintaining positive relationships with friends, family and co-workers can offer emotional support, reduce stress and promote a sense of belonging.

3. Seek Professional Help

Don't hesitate to seek professional help when you need it. Psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists are trained to offer tools and support when you feel the emotional burden is difficult to handle.

4. Talk Openly about Mental Health

Normalise talking about mental health with your loved ones. By sharing your emotions and experiences, you help reduce stigma and create a safe space where others feel comfortable to do so too.

Mental Health for All, Every Day

World Mental Health Day reminds us that emotional health is an essential part of our overall wellbeing, and that we must all work together to remove the barriers that prevent people from accessing the support they need. As we continue to move towards a more aware and caring society, let us remember that mental wellbeing is not a luxury, but a fundamental right that we all deserve.

At TREC Psychology, we are committed to providing the necessary support so that each person can manage their emotions and improve their mental health. If you feel you need support in this process, do not hesitate to contact us.
