High capacities
Among the aspects related to school performance, we not only find those children who have difficulties in acquiring academic learning, but also those pupils who excel and stand out for their performance and ability. These are children with high abilities, who also need to be helped and learning needs to be adapted to their educational needs.
Tal com mostra la guia "Les altes capacitats. Detecció i actuació en l'àmbit educatiu". According to the Department of Education, children with high abilities do not form a homogeneous group, and as with those with learning difficulties, there is great diversity.
Characteristics of boys/girls with higher-level intellectual abilities include:
The SuperdotacióThey show above-average cognitive ability, with good memory, attention and a predisposition for learning.
The Talentis characterised by a high aptitude in one area (verbal and/or mathematical talent) or in one type of processing (logical or creative talent). In the rest of the areas they may be discreet or even deficient.
The PrecocityThis is related to the evolutionary phenomenon, as they show a faster rate of development and tend to show a greater number of intellectual resources, compared to their peer group, while they are maturing. Once they have finished maturing, their intellectual capacities become more balanced with the rest of the children in their developmental stage.
For all these reasons, it is recommended that an early diagnosis be made at both a clinical and pedagogical level in order to redirect their learning and offer the necessary support to ensure both academic and emotional progress.
